Glass Taster Courses

Bite-Sized but just as Delicious!

Looking for something a little different to do with your friends on a weekday night? Flavour-testing a new hobby? Have a little extra time in your weekend? Seeking new avenues for your artistic practice?

Our ‘taster’ courses in the studio might be just the thing you’re looking for.

Shorter than our other workshops and kinder on your wallet, these weekend and weeknight classes are a great way for you to get creative and play with glass, without the usual full-day commitment.

Less technical, intensive, and hands-on than the rest of our program, these quick bites cater to all. For beginners they offer basic skills and knowledge, and serve as a smooth, friendly entry into the studio space, and for our returning makers, artists, and hobbyists, they offer a change of pace, a chance to try a new technique, a gateway for experimentation, and the ability to scratch that glass itch and whip up a quick, easy project.

Our Taster Courses are designed with fun and affordability in mind. If you have a tight grip on the budget, or have a booked-out calendar with little time to spare - these courses are just what you need.

All courses are taught by practicing artists working at Studio4. Please note that artworks made in class are scheduled to be collected typically 2 weeks following the date of your workshop.

This workshop will take you through the process of creating a bowl or platter from strips of vibrant coloured sheet glass!

In this 2 hour course, you will play with transparent and opaque glass and learn the art of glass cutting to customise your designs and bring your visions to life, layering elements and fine-tuning your arrangements to create a striking platter.

The process of creating what we call a ‘coral’ bowl involves cutting strips or shapes from glass sheets and working with negative space to create a form which is often geometric, branching, interwoven, latticed, or layered, given form and function through ‘slumping’ the glass into a mould. Radial designs often tend to look similar to coral, which gives this variety of glass platter its name. Colourful sheet glass can be paired with frit, powder, stringers, and enamels to further enhance your composition.

Glass is a versatile and vibrant medium with an extensive range of techniques to master. This entry-level class is a great starting point to get a feel for the medium and will equip you with the basic skills needed to try out even more complex classes.

All artistic materials, tools, and safety equipment provided, simply come to the course with some inspiration and ideas in mind, and an eagerness to learn.
